Four arrests at Wellington rugby test

1 min read

Four people were arrested at Westpac Stadium during tonight's rugby international between the All Blacks and the British and Irish Lions.

Police say the atmosphere at the start of the game was electric with particularly the Lions supporters in full voice.

One person was brought in for detoxication and three other Lions supporters for breach of the peace after running onto the pitch with their large mascot after the game ended. They've since been released without charge.

Thousands of people are now partying on the waterfront and in the Courtenay Place pedestrian precinct.

Police say the crowd mood so far is generally very good. Police are however critical of the idiotic behaviour of someone who has thrown Z nails on the urban motorway near The Terrace tunnel and in the Oriental Bay - Evans Bay Parade area.

Highway Patrol and Road Policing staff are currently helping 12 - 15 motorists whose tyres have been punctured by the lethal nails.

Officers say throwing Z nails on the road is highly dangerous and warn someone could be injured or killed.

There have been several incidents in recent months of Z nails being thrown but, despite extensive inquiries, an offender hasn't been caught. People whose vehicles were affected tonight, and who haven't reported the matter to police, are asked to contact Senior Constable Graeme Bergh, Wellington Central Police Station.

People who have information on who might be responsible for the incidents are also asked to contact police.
