Two people remain critically injured following fatal crash

Two passengers, who were injured in a fatal road crash yesterday, remain in a critical condition.

The crash happened around 2pm yesterday afternoon (Saturday, 5 September) on Railway Road near the junction of Maple Street in Bunnythorpe. A car travelling towards Bunnythorpe from Palmerston North lost control on a bend and crashed through a fence hitting a house.

The driver of the car, a 52-year-old woman, died at the scene.

A 28-year-old woman, who was the front seat passenger, was transferred from Palmerston North Hospital to Wellington where today she remains in a critical condition in ICU.

Three children were in the rear of the car. The two boys aged 9 and 6 were transferred to Starship Hospital in Auckland. The 6-year-old is in a critical but stable condition. The 9-year-old is undergoing surgery but is described as stable.

The 3-year-old girl remains in Palmerston North Hospital in a stable condition.

All five involved in the crash are believed to be members of the same family and are from the Feilding area.

The woman who was killed in the crash is expected to be named tomorrow morning. A karakia was performed at the crash scene by police.

The cause of the crash is still being investigated and anyone with information is asked to contact Palmerston North Police on 06 351 3600.
