Officer bitten by boy

1 min read

A Hamilton Policeman has to await the results of a series of tests to determine what if any risk he faces after suffering a serious bite to his arm while making an arrest overnight.

The officer was one of several Police staff who went to a Ross Cres address after reports of squatters being in a vacant house.

On arrival three juveniles were found at the address and steps taken to return them home.

When Police took a young girl and a 15-year-old boy back to the girl's address officers were told the boy was not welcome and the young couple decided to stage a sit-in protest in the patrol car.

As officers tried to convince the pair to exit the car the boy became violent and bit the officer on his arm. The wound was sufficient to require treatment by medical staff.

The boy was then arrested and placed in overnight custody in Police cells.

He will appear in the Hamilton District Court today on assaulting Police, disorder and resisting arrest charges.

Hamilton City Deployment Manager, Acting Inspector Sandra Venables, said such behaviour was unacceptable.

"This is the third incident of our staff suffering injury after being bitten by offenders this year. We don't tolerate that sought of behaviour from people's dogs and we will not tolerate it from people," she said.
