1 min read

Police today released the name of the man found dead inside the car driven by David Bourke.

He was Timothy Barry Bourke, aged 49 of Wanganui. Mr Bourke's body was found covered by a blanket on the back seat of the green Honda Rafaga driven by his brother David Bourke.

"Timothy died as a result of gunshot wounds. We are currently trying to identify the exact location of his death, " Detective Inspector Sue Schwalger said.

"The investigation is concentrating on the movements of David and Timothy Bourke, who we believe left Wanganui on Sunday morning at about 8am through to when David was stopped by police at about 4pm in Woodville. We would appreciate any sighting or interactions being reported to us."

A secondary phase for the police investigation is identifying all the sightings of David Bourke between 5pm on Sunday night till his capture at the Norsewood golf club yesterday morning.

"We are asking farmers to contact us to assist in determining the exact movements of David Bourke during this time and to any further offending that may have occurred."

Detective Inspector Schwalger said the Bourke family are understandably extremely upset by this turn of events and ask for privacy from the media.

David Bourke was apprehended by armed police officers yesterday morning at about 10.40am after nearly 40 hours on the run. He was within the police cordon that had been maintained throughout.

He has been released from hospital and is currently in police custody. He is appearing in Palmerston North District Court this afternoon charged with a number of offences in addition to the driving charges already laid.

He is charged with assault with a weapon, failing to remain (following the breath screen), uses a firearm at a police officer. Subsequent charges are likely to be laid depending on the investigation.
