Two charged over shoulder surfing

1 min read

Two men will appear in the Christchurch District Court today on various charges relating to `shoulder surfing'.

Detective Sergeant Virginia Le Bas says that a 32 year old male will appear on 5 charges and a 33 year old male will appear on 17 charges - both including taking a document for pecuniary advantage, and using a document - all relating to shoulder surfing in the Central city over the last year.

The investigations are continuing and further charges and arrests are possible, Ms Le Bas says.

"It is timely to advise people to take care of their credit cards and be aware when they use them of the possibility of others seeing personal information," she says.

Recently she was quoted as advising that it may be best to leave all your credit cards at home when you're out on the town.

"Decide how much money you are willing to spend and only take that amount of cash with you," Detective Sergeant Virginia le Bas said. "This will be all you can then spend - or lose. If you do take your cards, don’t let anyone see you input the PIN number and never tell it to anyone else."

"If passing over your card to start a tab, make sure you pick it up, and check that is your card and the correct amount of money before you approve, as you leave," she advises.
