Wing Patron: Dr Manying Ip ONZM, PhD

Manying Ip has become one of the best known Asian faces in New Zealand over the past decade. Her research on Chinese New Zealanders and Asian immigration makes her a sought-after commentator on public issues on television, radio and in print media. In 1993 she was awarded a Suffrage Centennial Medal (commemorating the 100th year of women's suffrage) for public services, and in 1996 she became an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

She has been teaching at the University of Auckland since 1982 and is currently Associate Professor in the School of Asian Studies. However, she is probably best known as the author of a number of critically acclaimed books on the Chinese in New Zealand and is considered a pioneer researcher in this field. Her most recent book is Aliens at My Table: Asians as New Zealanders See Them (2005). Currently she has an ongoing research project on the Chinese relationship with Mâori, entitled "Mâori-Chinese Encounters".
