A Polynesian man has died in Auckland Hospital, as a result of injuries he received in a two vehicle accident in West Auckland yesterday.

Police say that about 1.00pm on Sunday 2 April 2006, a tan coloured Subaru station wagon was waiting to turn right at the intersection of Central Park Drive and Paramount Drive in Henderson. The Subaru was suddenly hit from behind, by a Black Toyota sedan.

The Toyota was immediately driven from the scene, and was sighted heading in the direction of the Waitakere Hospital complex, where a male passenger was admitted to the Accident and Emergency sector of the hospital, with a suspected neck injury.

The injured man was later transferred to Auckland Hospital where he died last night.

The deceased man is:

SILIVA / Tevita Mekiti

Age 63 years - Widower.

Resident of Ranui, Auckland

Police say they are keen to talk to the driver of the Toyota about this incident.

Constable Karl Bevin of the Serious Crash Unit says he's investigating reports that the driver suddenly left the other occupants, and that he was last seen getting into a taxi outside the Maternity Ward entrance, at Waitakere Hospital.

"We are also keen to talk to any taxi drivers who may have picked up a fare from the hospital grounds at about 1.00pm yesterday afternoon," Constable Bevin said.

"We have a good description of the person who was driving the black Toyota sedan. We're hopeful that he can assist us with our current investigation, into this incident."

"The driver's description is - male, Polynesian, 31 years of age, stocky build, black hair. Police would like anyone who witnessed this collision at the Central Park Drive intersection to contact Serious Crash Unit at Telephone [09] 481-0307," Karl Bevin said.
