Wellington CIB is looking for a stolen Holden Commodore sedan which they believe may be linked to an aggravated robbery in Newtown last night.
Detective Sergeant Shona Low says a man in a black balaclava walked into the tavern on the corner of Riddiford and Wilson Streets, Newtown, about 9.40pm, produced a gun and demanded money from the male bar staff member.
The barman ordered the offender out, and he left the tavern empty handed, driving off with another man in a car along Wilson Street. It was found by police a short time later but there was no sign of the occupants.
Detective Sergeant Low says a blue 1991 Holden Commodore, registration RG5225, was at 11.30pm reported stolen from Mein Street, Newtown.
"We believe the stolen Commodore may be connected with the aggravated robbery at the tavern earlier in the evening," she says.
"We're asking the public to help us find this car, and the people involved in its disappearance."
She says several people were in the tavern at the time of the aggravated robbery but no one was hurt.
The offender is described as a solidly built male caucasian, about 6ft 1in tall.
People with information about the car or the offender are asked to contact Detective Sergeant Low, Wellington CIB, tel 381 2000.
