Police are trying to find witnesses after a man was assaulted in central Porirua, soon after a minor traffic incident with his attackers.
Detective Sergeant Andrew Saunders, Porirua CIB, says the incident started about 7.30pm on Wednesday, 21 June when the 65-year-old man was driving along Titahi Bay Road towards the bay. There was a minor traffic incident with another vehicle, the occupants of which then drove off.
The victim turned right into Semple Street and then right in Parumoana Street on his way to report the incident to Porirua Police Station. As he was driving past the Ford dealership on Parumoana Road he noticed the other vehicle following him.
"He pulled over in the parking area next to the Ford caryard and got out of his vehicle," Detective Sergeant Saunders says. "The other vehicle stopped, two offenders got out and then attacked the man, punching him numerous times in the face."
One of the offenders smashed out the rear window of the victim's car.
Detective Sergeant Saunders says there were four people in the offenders' car. They were described as Maori or Pacific Islanders aged in their late teens to early 20s. They were in a light coloured saloon with a registration similar to YQ1697. Checks have revealed that it was not this registration number.
The victim's left cheekbone was broken in the attack and he has since had metal plates inserted in his face.
