1 min read

The young man shot in a gun store in Penrose this morning underwent surgery for a stomach wound today and is in a stable condition in Auckland City Hospital.

Police are at the Great South Rd scene where the shooting took place and expect the scene examination will take a few days to complete.

Witnesses to the shooting have been helping Police with inquiries into the circumstances around it. It's understood up to four people - aside from the man who was shot - were in the shop at the time of the shooting.

A machete, which was carried into the premises by the shooting victim, is still in the shop. It's believed the man, a 19 year-old Aucklander, was shot by a member of staff using a hand gun.

Detective Senior Sergeant Simon Scott says the investigation team's objective is determine whether anyone present at the time of the shooting is criminally culpable for any of the events that unfolded there at about 10 o'clock this morning.
