Whangarei Police investigate two serious car crashes

A police vehicle, on the way to attending a car crash north of Whangärei, has been involved in another crash with a logging truck.

At about 5.50am this morning a vehicle heading south on State Highway One left the road near Kopeti Road, Hukerenui and rolled. The three male occupants of the vehicle received injuries ranging from critical to moderate.

One of the occupants was flown to Whangärei Hospital in a helicopter.

At about 6.15am a police sergeant was heading towards Hukerenui to investigate the crash when he collided with a fully laden logging truck on the Hikurangi bypass, State Highway One.

The driver of the police vehicle was not seriously injured and the driver of the truck was uninjured, but shaken.

A road diversion, covering both crashes, was set up from Hikurangi to north of Hukerenui.

Police are investigating both crashes.
