Wellington CIB has seized three cars as inquiries continue into a fatal crash in the city early yesterday morning.
A pedestrian, Amy Margaret Edward-Mintorn, 23, of Wellington, was killed as she crossed Cambridge Terrace near College Street about 1.40am.
Detective Senior Sergeant Shane Cotter, Wellington CIB, said that a red Toyota Trueno was seized at the crash scene. As a result of police inquiries two other vehicles - a white two door Subaru coupe and a silver/grey four door Subaru - were found and seized last night.
Police serious crash investigators, detectives and ESR forensic specialists will meticulously examine all three vehicles during the next few days. It could be a week before the results of their examinations are known.
"The three cars that are of immediate interest were all in separate lanes at the Cambridge Terrace and Vivian Street intersection shortly before the crash happened," Detective Senior Sergeant Cotter said.
"We have interviewed the drivers and are also talking with their passengers. There is a lot of inquiry work to do and no arrests have been made at this stage.
"It's really important that we find people who were in other vehicles in the Cambridge Terrace/Vivian Street area around the time of the crash, particularly those who were travelling directly behind the cars we've seized," he said.
Those motorists and pedestrians including people who were at nearby food outlets are urged to contact Wellington Police on 04 381 2000 if they have information that could help the inquiry. Police are also searching CCTV footage as part of the inquiry.
Detective Senior Sergeant Cotter said he was not prepared to comment on whether the seized cars were racing each other at the time of the crash. "We're aware of public speculation but our priority is on finding out the facts," he said.
