Searchers to reassess search for missing diver in the morning

1 min read

While searchers assess what their next move will be in relation to the search for a diver missing of the Raglan coast since Sunday Waikato Police are urging recreational divers not to put their lives and the lives of others at risk by starting uncoordinated searches.

Search Coordinator, Sergeant Warren Shaw of the Waikato Police Search and Rescue Squad, said members of the Police National Dive Squad and vessels returned to raglan harbour this evening without recovering the body of Te Awamutu man, 36-year-old John LINDSAY.

"We're yet to debrief today's activities but I can confirm Mr LINDSAY'S body was not found and we will be reassessing where we stand in terms of if we resume the search at first light tomorrow.

"In the interim Police ask people not to place themselves in a situation where they may require assistance by going out to the site to carry out unofficial searches of an area that has been thoroughly searched by divers, vessels, helicopters and fixed wing aircraft."

Mr Shaw said emergency services held genuine concerns that given the depths involved divers attempting to locate the missing man may themselves get into difficulties given the currents and depths involved which would require others putting themselves at risk to rescue them.

An update on what the next phase will be for searchers will be made after 8am tomorrow morning.
