Police recover body from Franz Joseph Glacier

1 min read

Police yesterday recovered the body of a man from the Franz Joseph Glacier.

Department of Conservation staff had alerted Police to a rental vehicle in the Franz Joseph Glacier carpark that had not moved since Thursday last week.

A Police Search and Rescue team searched the area by helicopter yesterday afternoon and located the man about 4pm at the bottom of a cliff.

Formal identification has not been completed, but Police believe the dead man is Ergine Choe, aged 31, from Incheon, South Korea. His family in Korea have been informed of the accident and the matter has been referred to the coroner.

Franz Joseph Police Constable Paul Gurney said Mr Choe had been in New Zealand for two weeks and he believed he was travelling alone. It appears he had wandered off Roberts Point Track and fallen to his death some days ago.
