The name of a motorcyclist killed in the north of the Coromandel Peninsula in a collision with another motorbike rider has been released.

He was Mark Gerard EGBERS, 48, of Auckland.

Mr EGBERS was westbound on a Honda motorcycle on SH25 between Coromandel and Matarangi when the crash happened about 12.55pm.

The Waikato Serious Crash Unit is still investigating the cause of the crash but initial indications are that it occurred when an eastbound blue Suzuki motorcycle, ridden by a 31-year-old Auckland man, crossed the centreline on a series of S-bends resulting in a head-on collision in the westbound lane.

The rider of the Suzuki was flown to Auckland's Starship Hospital by helicopter in a critical condition.

SH25 was closed for about four hours to allow the scene to be cleared and a preliminary crash investigation to be completed.

Note to media; It was confirmed patient was flown to Starship, not Auckland Hospital.
