Hastings Police have arrested a 21-year-old Hastings man and charged him with manslaughter after the death of a 5-month-old baby boy who was admitted to Hawke's Bay Regional Hospital on the evening of Tuesday 11 January. The baby subsequently died from serious internal injuries.

A post mortem was held in Wellington on 12 January 2011 and further medical tests are being conducted.

Detective Senior Sergeant Dave de Lange of the Hastings CIB says Police have spoken to members of the baby's family who have been co-operative and helpful with Police during the investigation.

The 21-year-old man charged in relation to the baby's death was remanded in custody when he appeared in the Hastings District Court on Saturday. He is due to appear in the Hastings court again tomorrow. He has interim name suppression.
