The locations may change but the message remains the same; drive to the conditions, if they change reduce your speed say Waikato Police dealing with the District's third multiple fatality crash this year.

Waikato Road Policing Manager, Inspector Leo Tooman, said two men, one aged 26, the other aged 22, lost their lives in a two vehicle collision on SH39 about 6.30pm.

"The crash is currently under investigation by the Serious Crash Unit however initial indications are a southbound Honda Civic has crossed the centreline on a sign-posted 65km/h corner on a stretch of SH39 known as Horotiu Rd, near the intersection of Limmer Rd.

"As the car was spinning out of control it has collided with a northbound Nissan double-cab utility, both men in the Honda were killed in the crash while the driver of the ute was shaken but unhurt."

Mr Tooman said the road conditions were wet at the time of the crash and speed appears to have played a major factor in the incident, the formal identification of the men is still underway.

The road on which the men were travelling is one popular with skiers heading down to the slopes from Auckland and had already been identified as warranting additional road policing resources.

"The public will have noticed a greater Police presence on this road and with the onset of bad weather we're asking motorists to watch their speeds and following distances and ensure they get plenty of rest before heading down to the mountains and heading home."

Mr Tooman said last night's deaths took the Waikato's road toll to 29, the same number for the same period last year and 10 more than the next highest toll, 19, in the Central Police District.

"To address, this additional road policing staff have been bought in from across the North Island including Highway Patrol, Booze Bus and speed camera staff to lift our profile on the roads, what we need from the public ids for them to do their part as well.

"We need to address the basics, yesterday a woman was found driving over three times over the legal limit returning a breath alcohol reading of 1460mgms. Elsewhere we saw cars travelling in the dark at 5.30pm without lights on and one off-duty officer was passed on the Mamuku's while he was driving at 90km/h in heavy rain by a truck and trailer unit, all basic easily rectified issues that we are simply not getting right."
