"A Police review of the investigations into the death of 7 week-old, Linda Rose Bailey in April 1989 in Central Otago has concluded that there is insufficient evidence to support criminal charges being brought against anyone relating to this tragedy", said Superintendent George Fraser, Southern District Commander.
"Whilst the initial investigation focused on the tragic aspect of the case, subsequent investigations and reviews identified the potentially suspicious nature of the death", said Superintendent Fraser.
In undertaking his comprehensive review, Auckland based Detective Superintendent Andy Lovelock took into consideration a number of statements provided to Police by the Sensible Sentencing Trust, and visited the former Bailey home in Ettrick, Central Otago.
"I am satisfied that everything has been addressed in this review to determine if there is sufficient evidence to charge anyone involved in this tragic death. Detective Superintendent Lovelock reached a conclusion, which is supported by the Auckland Crown Solicitor who provided legal advice, that there is insufficient evidence to take the matter any further".
Although Police do not intend to actively investigate the matter further Superintendent Fraser said that any new information provided to Police would be carefully assessed to determine whether any further investigation is warranted.
