Three fires in five days

2 min read

Police are investigating a series of three fires that have occurred at the Foxton Racecourse in the last five days.

Fire Services were first called about midnight on Friday, 18 November to a fire in the grandstand at the racecourse. This resulted in damage to the race day office and grandstand.

Then at approximately 10.50pm on Saturday, 19 November, Fire Services and Police responded to calls of a second fire, this time in one of the stable blocks. The building was ablaze and has resulted in its complete destruction and loss of a substantial amount of feed and other equipment.

At approximately 10.50pm on Tuesday, 23 November a third fire was reported at the racecourse this time to a second stable block which has also experienced severe damage.

No animals have been injured as a result of these fires.

Police and Fire investigators have examined the various scenes and have confirmed that all three fires are suspicious. A full police investigation is underway with officers from both Foxton and Levin involved.

Acting Detective Sergeant Marianne Whitfield, said: "There is clearly a link between these three incidents and it would appear that there is a person or persons that have an issue with the racecourse.

"Thankfully to date no people or animals have been injured. However, both have been put at risk due to distressed animals needing to be moved from the vicinity of the fires."

Police would like to hear from anyone who has any information that could assist. This includes people who have witnessed anything in the vicinity of the racecourse or anyone who has knowledge of why someone may want to cause damage at that location.

Police would also like to speak to a man who was seen in the area of the racecourse around 11pm on Saturday, 19 November. He is a potential witness and is described as about 18-20 years, with a small amount of facial hair under his bottom lip, wearing a beanie. He was also riding an old pushbike.
