Wellington Police have arrested a 33-year-old Wellington man in relation to a serious sexual assault that allegedly happened in Wellington city centre in the early hours of Sunday morning, 29 April 2007, between 12.10am and 12.50am.

The man appeared in the Wellington District Court today charged with sexual violation by rape and sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection.

The Police are very grateful to members of the public who came forward with information after seeing the female victim on Vivian Street shortly after the alleged incident, says Detective Sergeant Shona Low.

"Police are still very keen to hear from the group of men who spoke with the victim on Taranaki Street near the corner of Vivian Street.

"After speaking with this group, the victim walked down Taranaki Street with them and they flagged down a taxi and assisted in getting her home.

"This group of men provided help and safety to the victim and may well have seen the assailant and could hold vital information," says Detective Sergeant Low.

Anyone who can assist with police inquiries should contact Detective Sergeant James McKAY on Tel: 04 496 3454
