Family pay tribute to missing swimmer

1 min read

The family of missing man Duane Kaka have described him as an easy going and generous man.

Duane, 34, has been missing since Saturday when he was swept away as he attempted to swim across the Whanganui River while on a group canoe trip. Daily searches since Saturday have so far been unsuccessful.

The Kaka family have provided the following statement: "Duane is a good family man; a happy-go-lucky guy and very easy going. He's a fit guy who would give you the shirt off his back. As a family we have pretty much accepted that he has gone and we just want him back so we can take him home."

Duane's family do not wish to make any further comment or issue a photo of Duane at this stage and are requesting their privacy.

A sweep of the river by boat is continuing daily involving Police, assisted by LandSAR volunteers and members of the Ruapehu Alpine Rescue Organisation. Tour boats are also being extra vigilant during their day to day operations.

The river has significantly receded since the weekend, but is still above normal levels and the water remains murky providing minimal visibility.
