1 min read

Christchurch Police this afternoon located a toy gun, following enquiries into an incident at Burnside High School, where a person was seen in the school grounds carrying what appeared to be a silver pistol.

Police say the toy pistol was found in the possession of a youth spoken to by police this afternoon.

Enquiries are continuing but police say they are satisfied that the incident was not suspicious and that there was no malicious intent in today's events.

Students who saw the person did the right thing by reporting it to the school, police say.

Police were called to the school after reports a male aged between 16 and 18 was seen in the school grounds at around 11.00am carrying what appeared to be a pistol.

The person was seen exiting the school grounds towards Memorial Avenue. A sweep of the area by police did not locate any suspects at that time, and Police say there was no indication of any threat or risk to students or people nearby.

Students were kept indoors for a short period while an initial sweep was carried out, but the school returned to normal operation by early afternoon.

Around 20 police attended the incident, but were stood down by mid-afternoon.
