Police Human Resources General Manager Wayne Annan says Police will be about 50 officers ahead of target when this financial year ends on 30 June.
"Further, our attrition rate for the past 12 months is 3.8% - the lowest ever. About 320 officers have left in the past year, compared to the usual annual exit figure of around 400.
"So we're very happy with our current staffing situation."
Mr Annan said four-fifths of the officers recruited from the United Kingdom have stayed.
"The ones who have returned to the UK have done so for a variety of reasons, including family. When people move from one side of the world to the other, it's not surprising some find it's not for them."
Mr Annan said the UK recruits pay their own way to New Zealand. The recruiting process has been refined since the scheme began in 2003, with recruits now much better informed on what to expect. Officers with specific skills are also being targeted.
"The UK officers are making a valuable contribution to New Zealand Police in a variety of areas," he said.
