On Thursday, 5 April the Central District Highway Patrol ran a vehicle and road safety operation on State Highway One at Sanson.

The operation ran from 4pm through to 6pm and was designed to reinforce the key road safety messages, targeting vehicle fitness and breath-testing all drivers.

The operation was supported by the Central District Traffic Alcohol Group and key road safety partners including ACC, Horizons and St John. Road safety information packs were given out to the occupants of vehicles

As a result of this operation Police stopped 837 vehicles. There was only one negative breath screening tests and no one found to be over the legal drink-drive limit.

Police also issued 5 infringement notices for various vehicle defects and drivers licence offences.

Overall the operation was well received by the motoring public who all appreciated the purpose, being road safety, the commencement of the Easter weekend and the start of a two-week school holiday break.

The officer in charge of Central District's Highway Patrol, Senior Sergeant Kris Burbery said: "Please do not forget over the official holiday period of Easter, which runs 4pm, Thursday 5 April through to 6am on Tuesday, 10 April, that the tolerance for exceeding the speed limit has been reduced to 4 km/h. So remember the speed limit is just that - a limit. It is not a target."
