Police seek prisoner after court escape

Christchurch Police are seeking sightings of a prisoner who absconded from custody at the District Court at Nga Hau e Wha Marae this afternoon.

Jayson Nopera Rule, aged 31, of Christchurch appeared at the Court today on charges of assault and breach of home detention, and had been remanded in custody.

At approximately 1.00pm, while in a holding cell at the marae, it is believed Rule was able to kick in the cell door and escape on foot.

A warrant for his arrest has been issued. Police are now making enquiries at known addresses and with known associates.

Rule is described as a male Maori, 180 cm (5ft 11in) tall, of medium muscular build.
