Man charged with murder over Christchurch death

Christchurch Police have arrested and charged a man with the murder of a woman in the suburb of Burwood this morning.

Detective Senior Sergeant Tony Hill says a 29-year old Kaiapoi man was interviewed by Police this afternoon and has been charged with the murder this evening. He will appear at Christchurch District Court tomorrow [Thursday] morning.

The identity of the victim has not yet been released as next of kin are still being notified. A post-mortem will be conducted tomorrow.

Detective Senior Sergeant Hill says the early arrest is a positive result for police, and came about as the result of good investigative work this afternoon.

"We are continuing to talk to people associated with the victim and our forensic work will also continue for some time as we put together a picture of what has occurred."

A team of 20 Police investigators along with ESR staff are currently working on the investigation. A scene examination at the Travis Road address is likely to continue for several days.
