Deaths of NZDF personnel in Afghanistan keenly felt by Police staff

1 min read

Police Commissioner Peter Marshall has expressed his shock and sadness about the two NZDF personnel killed in Afghanistan at the weekend.

"The deaths of these men and the injuries sustained by six others is a grim reminder of the inherent risks that all New Zealanders face who are serving in Afghanistan." said Mr Marshall.

"New Zealand Police has deployed staff to Bamyan Province since 2005 as part of the Provincial Reconstruction Team.

"We've been in contact with our current team of five in Bamyan who are naturally deeply shocked at these events and are providing what support they can to their NZDF colleagues.

"There are strong bonds between Police and NZDF personnel forged through numerous operational situations over the years, most recently the aftermath of the 2011 Christchurch earthquake.

"Police and NZDF share the risks which come with the service they give to their communities and country. While everything is done to minimise the dangers, they accept that making a difference to people's lives in their respective roles will always carry some risk.

"I know the loss of these two men will be keenly felt by all New Zealand Police officers and our thoughts are very much with their families and colleagues at this time of grieving."
