One child survives, one deceased in submerged vehicle

An eight year-old girl has been rescued alive from a vehicle which rolled into a pond at a goldmine near Ruatapu in Westland this evening. The girl spent more than two hours in the submerged vehicle before being rescued by Police Officers and firefighters.

Police have also recovered the body of the girl's 10 year-old brother from the vehicle.

Police are not looking for any other victims of this evening's accident.

The girl has been taken to hospital suffering hypothermia and is reported to be doing well.

A scene guard is in place overnight and an investigation into the accident will resume tomorrow.
