Young man assisting with homicide investigation

1 min read

Auckland City Police are speaking with an 18 year-old man regarding his activities in and around Herne Bay on Saturday night and early on Sunday morning. Police can confirm he is one of the two men identified as a person of interest to Operation Hamilton, the investigation into Augustine Borrell's murder.

Police have attempted to make contact with a second person of interest but have not been successful as yet.

Information to date would suggest these two persons of interest never went to the party in Hamilton Rd and that they are not members of any formal or informal gang.

No arrests have been made in connection with Augustine's death.

In a development earlier this afternoon, one of the young men captured on video surveillance footage at the BP service station on Jervois Rd near where Augustine was killed, contacted Police and has given a statement about his activities on the night.

"We're satisfied that he had no involvement in Augustine's murder," Detective Senior Sergeant Steve Breach said.

"We're grateful to the media for distributing the images so swiftly and that in turn has saved us an enormous amount of time that would've otherwise been spent trying to track him down."

Police are also satisfied that the three Caucasian male occupants of the Mercedes Benz car seen in Hamilton Rd and its surrounds on Saturday night had nothing to do with Augustine's death and appear to have arrived on the scene shortly after he was stabbed.
