Whangamata Police are seeking assistance from the public as they seek to locate an elderly Alzheimer's sufferer who has been missing for over three hours.

Constable Andrew Osborn of the Waikato Police Search and Rescue Squad said 75-year-old Auckland man, James GOLDSWORTHY, was reported missing by family from an Ocean Rd property about 7am.

"Mr GOLDSWORTHY is fit and healthy but suffers from Alzheimer's.

"He has been reported as wearing a collared shirt of unknown colour and dark blue track pants. He likes walking but can't swim and he is described as having minimal facial hair."

Mr Osborn said family members have been conducting searches of the area and have been joined by Police as well as members of the Whangamata Surf Club who are conducting searches of the beach area on quad bikes.

"At this point we're appealing for any sightings of Mr GOLDSWORTHY or of anyone matching this description who may appear disorientated or in distress.

"If anyone does sight someone who might fall into this category please check if that person is alright and phone 111 immediately."
