Hutt Valley Police have launched a homicide investigation after a 30-year-old man died from a stab wound to his chest overnight.

Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Thornton says "Police were called to the East Street address around 10.30pm last night.

"Ambulance and Police staff have attempted to resuscitate the man but he has died at the scene.

"Police have secured the East Street block of flats and a scene examination will occur today.

"A 29-year-old woman has been arrested and will be interviewed by Police today.

"At this early stage of the inquiry, we don't believe that local residents should be worried about their safety.

"I would encourage them to come forward and tell us about the events of last night", says Detective Senior Sergeant Thornton.

Police are appealing for any witnesses who were in the area last night to contact Hutt Valley Police on (04) 560 2600.
