Police investigate sexual violation complaint

1 min read

Wellington CIB are investigating a complaint from a young woman that she was sexually violated by men believed to be with the New Zealand Rugby League team.

The alleged violation is believed to have happened on Sunday night in Lower Hutt, at a location where members of the team were gathering.

Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Borrell, Wellington CIB, said the young woman is very distressed at what took place.

"Our inquiry has only just started and we're still gathering all the relevant information. Given that the team is now playing overseas, it will be some time before our inquiry is completed.

"A central focus of the investigation is to establish the identities of the men involved. Just who they are is not clear at this point," said Detective Senior Sergeant Borrell.

"It is inappropriate for police to comment further on the details of the investigation, except to say that we have been in contact with New Zealand Rugby League management."
