Police divers search river by scene of shooting

1 min read

Police divers are today helping the team of detectives investigating the death of George Taiaroa in Atiamuri on Tuesday.

The search in the Waikato River is part of the extended scene examination looking for any items that might assist with the ongoing investigation. It's not clear at this stage how long the Police National Dive Team will need to complete the search.

The positive response from the public continues and by piecing together sightings of the blue 4WD vehicle immediately after the incident Police have been able to track it through the web of rural and forest roads to the main road that runs between Mangakino and Benneydale.

Detective Inspector Mark Loper said: "There are a number of routes the vehicle could have taken from that main road and a key focus is tracking its movements from that point. I also want to appeal directly to the driver of that vehicle to come forward; likewise anyone who knows, or suspects, who killed Mr Taiaroa. Anyone who contacts us can be assured they will be doing so in complete confidence."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the investigation team directly on 0800 Kingswood (0800 546 479). Alternatively information can be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
