Hamilton shooting update 3

As the investigation into a shooting in a Hamilton suburb on Wednesday night continues into its second day the officer in charge of the inquiry says the priority remains firming up what is confirmed and avoiding jumping to conclusions.

Detective Sergeant Graham Pitkethley of the Waikato CIB said forensic experts had carried out an examination of a Churchill Ave property yesterday and today would conduct a search of a vehicle recovered from the scene.

"A .22cal firearm recovered from this vehicle will also be examined. Our victim is assisting investigators and is currently recovering in Waikato Hospital from surgery carried out yesterday afternoon.

"The examinations that have been completed or that are currently underway will help us build a picture forensically on exactly what has happened. A key for investigators is not jumping to conclusions prior to obtaining those results and keeping an open mind in relation to a number of scenarios that could have occurred."

Mr Pitkethley said it was a case of identifying which pieces were part of this puzzle rather than just putting the pieces together and while this is being done the public can play their part.

"We're seeking information on activities at the address on Churchill Ave on Wednesday evening or any other information relating to what has happened.

"Don't rule out any information you have or presume Police already know about it. If you know something we want to hear from you as we work to establish the shooter's identity."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Operation Churchill investigation team at the Hamilton Central Police Station on 07 858 6200.

Alternatively, information can be left anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
