Four males and a female appeared in the Christchurch District Court today on charges relating to theft ex car offences after an extensive police operation.

Christchurch Police had recently identified a significant increase in the number of thefts from vehicles in Christchurch City and rural areas over the last month. These extended to Rangiora and Kaiapoi.

Detective Senior Sergeant David Harvey says it is of concern to police that the blatant offending has occurred.

"This is a warning to vehicle owners to put valuable belongings out of sight and present few opportunities for theft," he says. "Put belongings in the boot before you arrive at your destination but preferably leave all valuable treasures and objects at home safely rather than in your vehicle."

Four of the offenders are male, all 18 years old. Three were remanded in custody.

The female offender is, aged 19years old, she was granted bail along with one male.

The female and one male are employed, three males are unemployed. All are Christchurch based.
