Cyclist killed in Petone road crash

1 min read

Lower Hutt Police and specialist serious crash and commercial vehicle investigation units are at the scene of a fatality in Petone.

Inspector Richard Chambers, Lower Hutt Police Area Commander, said a 57-year-old male cyclist died at the scene. The cyclist and an articulated truck and trailer unit were travelling in the same direction when the crash happened on the roundabout with the Hutt Road and The Esplanade on the Petone foreshore.

The name and identity details of the cyclist will not be released until his immediate next of kin have been informed. Police are still in the process of contacting his family.

Inspector Chambers said it is too early to speculate on how the crash happened. Police staff are talking with witnesses, including the driver of the truck.

"It was dark and the crash happened at peak time," Inspector Chambers said. "We are following our standard investigation process to find out just how the fatality happened."

He said police and ambulance staff were quickly at the scene but attempts to revive the cyclist were unsuccessful.

The crash caused significant delays to commuter traffic. Police hope to reopen the scene shortly.
