The driver of a four-wheel drive that allegedly ran a red light and collided with a car in Te Rapa on Sunday night, seriously injuring a mother, has been arrested.

Senior Sergeant Kevin Anderson of Hamilton Police said the 33-year-old self-employed Cambridge man came forward to Police last night.

The man, who is not the vehicle's owner, told Cambridge Police on Monday that the Nissan Terrano 4wd had been stolen from him.

"However he has made a full and frank confession in regards to what really happened," said Mr Anderson.

A 25-year-old Hamilton woman driving a Ford Laser struck by the 4wd suffered serious injuries and had to be cut out of her vehicle by firefighters.

She remains in a serious condition in Waikato Hospital's High Dependency Unit.

Driving from the crash scene the man parked the 4wd out of view near the 'Boulevard' in Te Rapa where it was found locked a short time later by Police.

On Monday Police credited a car seat as being pivotal in ensuring the safety of the woman's four-year-old daughter who escaped the crash with scratches and bruising.

"The driver will be appearing in the Hamilton District Court today facing charges of making a false complaint and failing to ascertain injury at a crash, further charges are likely.

"At this time Police would like to thank all the members of the public for their assistance both at the scene of the crash and with information that helped us locate the offending vehicle so quickly," said Mr Anderson.
