NZ, Internet and Police prevent suicide in US

1 min read

Quick action by a New Zealander talking to a friend in the US on the internet prevented a suicide attempt from being fatal.

The Northern Police communications centre received a call last week from an Auckland woman who was talking on the internet to a friend in Texas. The friend had recently had relationship difficulties and was allegedly suicidal. He told the Auckland woman that he was in the process of making a suicide attempt.

The woman became very concerned and immediately contacted New Zealand Police. The information was sent via Interpol in Wellington to the local Police in Lubbock County, Texas. Lubbock police went to the man’s address and took him to hospital. The whole incident was over within a couple of hours.
