Acting Police Commissioner Lyn Provost this afternoon expressed her deep regret over the death of Halatau Naitoko in yesterday's Auckland motorway shooting.
"This is an absolute tragedy. Police all round the country are saddened by the outcome of yesterday's events. On behalf of all our staff, I'd like to extend my sympathy to Mr Naitoko's parents, family and friends on the loss of a much loved young man."
Mrs Provost said police staff also feel for their fellow officers, who were put in a difficult and dangerous position by the alleged offender.
She said a robust investigation process is in place. An out of district Detective Inspector is heading the Police investigation team while the Independent Police Conduct Authority is carrying out its own independent inquiry.
"The officers assigned to the Police team will be conducting a thorough and professional investigation."
Mrs Provost said Police would also carry out a full debrief.
"If the investigation or debrief shows there are measures we can take to make sure an event like this won't happen again, then we'll take the necessary steps at that time."
