Three to four hundred people including members of the police inquiry team walked quietly along the Hutt River banks this morning in a commemorative walk for Lower Hutt murder victim Kate Alkema.
Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Oxnam, inquiry head, said the mood was a reflective one with people quietly talking amongst themselves and thinking what Kate meant to them.
Kate’s family, friends, work colleagues and members of the public strolled from Avalon Park south along the riverbank walkway to Melling near where Kate’s murdered body was found a week ago last Saturday.
Along the way balloons were released and floral tributes were left at the scene where Kate’s body was found.
"Everyone had their own reasons for joining the walk and really it was an opportunity to think about what Kate meant to all of us," Mr Oxnam said.
Police investigating Kate’s death are still wanting to hear from people who saw a man on a bicycle in the area between Melling and Ewen Bridges on the western side of the river last Saturday morning (13 April).
Posters and fliers appealing for information were distributed yesterday along the riverbank walkway and in the main Lower Hutt shopping centre. Police spoke with more than 1000 people and are working through the information today to see if there are any further details that help.
