Homicide At Auckland Prison - Day Two

Police investigating the death of a 23 year old male inmate in the East Wing at Auckland Prison say a systematic rummage of a number of cells in the Wing is in progress this morning.

Detective Senior Sergeant Kim LIBBY, Officer in Charge of the North Shore CIB says two specialist search groups, consisting of eight persons in each group will be meticulously searching a number of cells in the selected prison block.

"We're looking for any items of interest or other information that will help us identify the person or persons responsible for the killing. There's numerous personal items held in the cells and we'll be rummaging for any clues."

The deceased inmate is Tue FAAVAE. His body was discovered inside a cell block in the East Wing of the prison at about 11.ooam on Sunday. Mr. FAAVAE was serving a prison sentence for aggravated robbery.

"Mr. FAAVAE was on time out from his cell when he was attacked. The post mortem has established that he died as a result of injuries received in a serious assault."

"A scene guard is in place and investigators are interviewing a number of witnesses inside the prison about events that took place prior to the discovery of the body," Mr. LIBBY said
