Road fatality south of Hamilton

1 min read

Waikato Police are urging motorists to drive to the conditions following a fatal road crash in wet conditions south of Hamilton this morning.

Police, Fire and power workers are currently at the scene of a single vehicle crash that claimed the life of a 30-year-old woman on SH3 at Rukuhia about 10.30am.

The road is currently closed to allow the Waikato Serious Crash Unit to carry out their preliminary investigation and for power company workers to make the scene safe.

SH3 is expected to remain closed to traffic until at least 1pm.

Senior Sergeant Jeff Penno of the Hamilton Police said initial indications on the cause of the crash are that the woman, who was the sole occupant of the southbound car, has lost control on a bend, over corrected and the vehicle has then struck a power pole.

"The crash happened during a period of consistent rain which is the first we've had in a while so we're urging drivers to exercise caution on the roads at present.

"Diversions are in place for southbound traffic at Raynes Rd on to Middle Rd and northbound traffic is being turned off at the intersection of SH3 and Airport Rd."
