Matamata Police are appealing for witnesses following the death of a young boy in a traffic incident outside the town this afternoon.

Sergeant Neil Mansill of the Matamata- Piako Strategic Traffic Unit said the tragedy occurred about 3.45pm on Tower Rd.

"It appears an 11-year-old boy has been dropped off by a school bus and then crossed the road into the path of a car heading in the opposite direction which has struck him causing fatal injuries.

"The Waikato Serious Crash Unit is investigating the incident and are appealing for anyone who may have seen what happened to come forward."

Waikato Police are currently working with the schools that had students on the bus and the Ministry of Education to provide victim support and counselling for those affected.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Mr Mansill at the Matamata Police Station on 07 8887117.

Due to the limited number of phone lines available Police are requesting media not to phone through to the Matamata station as no further information is available at this time.
