Man charged after assault on elderly woman

Police investigating the physical and sexual assault of an elderly woman in her Eltham home have this afternoon charged a man with the attack.

The 17-year-old local man was arrested around lunchtime today at a residential address in Eltham. He has since been charged with three counts of sexual violation, assault with intent to commit sexual violation, burglary and unlawful on property.

He will appear at Hawera District Court this afternoon, time allowing. If not, he will appear at New Plymouth District Court tomorrow morning.

Detective Senior Sergeant Keith Borrell would like to express his thanks to the local community for their assistance which helped lead to an early arrest.

The woman, who is in her 70s, has now been released from hospital into the care of her family.
