Advisory - Search and Rescue exercise at Matanaka Caves near Dunedin

1 min read

Police will be participating in a multi-agency search and rescue exercise today (Sunday 29 July) to be held off the coast of Waikouaiti, approximately 20 minutes north of Dunedin.

The exercise has a focus on the Matanaka Caves area and local search and rescue partner agencies will be involved. This includes Surf Life Saving, Otago Rescue Helicopter, Coastguard, Marine SAR, Water Rescue Squad, AREC and recreational boats.

Sergeant Nathan White, Otago Coastal SAR Coordinator, said they will be undertaking a marine search which may involve recovering missing parties.

“The public can expect to see volunteers and mannequins in the water as part of this and should not be alarmed.

"We hope to enhance multiagency response and be more prepared for an emergency event, as well as enhancing current skills and practices.”

The exercise will begin around 8am on Matanaka Drive and finish around 1pm.
