Baby in Starship Hospital after assault in Waitara

A one-month old baby girl is currently in Starship children's hospital after an alleged serious assault in Waitara on Friday November 6.
The incident is believed to have occurred between 11am and 11.20am in Brown Rd, Waitara.  The girl's mother initially took her to the Waitara Medical Centre, and she was then taken to Taranaki Base Hospital in a serious condition. She was later flown to Starship Hospital for treatment.

The girl’s condition is currently stable and improving.
A 29-year-old orchard worker appeared in the New Plymouth District Court on Monday charged with injuring with intent to injure, wounding with reckless disregard and breaching a protection order.

The man entered no plea to the charges and was remanded in custody to reappear on December 3.
Police is unable to comment further while the matter is before the court.
