Buckle up and take care on our roads

2 min read

Central District Police are reminding motorists and passengers to always wear seatbelts and drive to the conditions as people make travel plans for Labour weekend.

"Seatbelts are not accessories; they save lives. Drivers and passengers alike must make sure everyone is wearing seatbelts, and that young children are wearing the correct safety restraints before starting their journey,” says Central District Road Policing Manager, Inspector Dave White.

"There are added risks when driving on roads during peak holiday traffic and it's vital that motorists are prepared, drive to the conditions and remain aware at all times.

"Police want everyone to get to their destinations safely, and not become another statistic.

"While the vast majority of motorists are responsible road users, there are still those who choose to drive in a way that puts all at risk. Those people can expect to face appropriate action by Police."

The official holiday period runs from 4pm Friday, 24th October until 6am Tuesday, 28 October and during this time, a reduced speed threshold is in place for all permanent posted speed limits. Anyone who drives more than 4km/h over these limits is liable to be ticketed.

Police also remind drivers to be aware of their following distances, take breaks if fatigue starts to set in, and avoid distractions such as cellphones.

"We also urge drivers to be patient and considerate towards other road users, particularly with higher traffic volumes expected over the long weekend.”

If towing or driving a slower vehicle, please pull over where safe to do so and allow traffic to pass to avoid other motorists becoming frustrated and taking unnecessary risks.

"Our district has some of the most used roads and highways in the North Island and during holiday season they can become congested. Making sure your vehicle is fit for the journey and checking for any delays before leaving home could save unwanted frustration in the long run."
