At around 10.12am this morning Police were called to a crash at the intersection of State Highway 16 and Joyce Adams Place in Waimauku.
A car has collided with a freight train on a level crossing. As a result the 73 year-old driver of the car died at the scene.
The man was the sole occupant of his vehicle.
The Waitemata Serious Crash Unit is investigating the cause in conjunction with Kiwirail.
The man's family are being supported by Victim Support.
His name will be released after extended family have been advised.
