Car crash on State Highway 16

The driver of a car that crashed on State Highway 16 at around 10.50am was fleeing from Police when the crash occurred.

The male driver has been arrested, he has been taken to hospital with moderate injuries and is under Police guard.

The female front-seat passenger has also been taken to hospital with moderate to minor injuries.

A 5 month-old baby in the rear of the car has been taken to hospital in a status 2 condition.

The pursuit began when Police attempted to stop the vehicle for driving at excessive speed. The driver failed to stop and was accelerating away from Police when the driver has lost control and the car rolled.

No other vehicles or members of the public were involved.

A large number of Police, including the Serious Crash Unit, are currently at the scene.

Inspector Mark Fergus will hold a press conference outside the Orewa Police Station at 3.30pm. Further details will be released then. This will be the only opportunity for interview today.
