Charge laid in relation to two-year-old's death

Counties Manukau Police have charged a 26-year-old man with unlawful possession of a pistol, following the death of a two-year-old girl in Mangere this morning.
 
The man was taken into Police custody today in relation to the girl’s death at a house in Favona Rd.
 
The man will appear in the Manukau District Court tomorrow morning.
 
Detective Inspector Faa Va’aelua says further charges will be considered at the conclusion of the investigation.
 
Police are unable to identify the two-year-old, or the man who has been charged, as extended family of the child are yet to be notified.
 
The name of the child is not expected to be released until tomorrow afternoon.
 
No further comment is available at this stage. 
 
Note: In the Firearms Act a pistol is defined as any firearm less than 762mm in length, which includes a shotgun or rifle which has been cut down.
